Superfoods & Supplements

There are so many to go into that it would take a whole website to cover them all, so below I have listed a synopsis of some of my favourite ones. You can also read about various superfoods on my health articles page, which contains articles I have written that go into plenty of details on various superfoods, foods and supplements.

Apricot kernels are, like most nuts and seeds, very nutritious. Among the nutrients they contain is one called amygdalin, which is also known as vitamin B17. This attacks cancer cells, and thus can help prevent cancer from breaking out in our bodies. Amygdalin (vitamin B17) is contained in many hundreds of foods, but ones that are particularly rich in amygdalin have disappeared to a large extent from our Western diet. Peoples throughout the world that still eat a traditional diet have been found to be largely free from cancer as these diets are rich in foods containing amygdalin.

This superfood is covered in the cacao for ceremonial purposes section.

Salt gets a bad rap – but in it’s natural form, it is a vital substance for maintaining your health. Refined salt is the type of salt which is extremely unhealthy, but natural salts are necessary for our bodies to function properly. Isolated, synthetic, sodium chloride however, with none of the valuable minerals and trace elements, cannot be assimilated by the body, making it a poison to the system. Celtic Sea Salt is pure and unrefined, so has the perfect balance of minerals, nutrients and sodium chloride that we need for optimum health; your body can recognise and absorb these essential nutrients efficiently.

Other sea salts are lacking in approximately 90% of the essential trace elements and minerals. ‘Sea Salt’ only means it comes from the ocean, but it’s quite likely to have been refined: i.e. exposed to damaging artificial heat, destroying the structure. Refined salt is a clean white colour, whereas celtic salt should be grey and slightly damp, a sign of being magnesium rich. Celtic salt tastes very pleasant, can remove problems like headaches and cramps. Most people would need around a teaspoon or 1 to 1.5 teaspoons per day in their diet.

"Chia" is the Mayan word for strength. They contain 2 times the protein of any other seed or grain, 5 times the calcium of milk, plus boron which is a trace mineral that helps transfer calcium into your bones, 2 times the amount of potassium as bananas, 3 times the reported antioxidant strength of blueberries, 3 times more iron than spinach – and copious amounts of omega-3 and omega-6, which are essential fatty acids. They are a complete source of protein, providing all the essential amino acids and are a fabulous source of soluble fibre. The seeds absorb water and create a mucilaginous gel in under 10 minutes, great for adding to smoothies, sauces etc.

The taste of chia is very mild and pleasant; it can be combined with other foods without changing the taste.  Chia ‘bulks up’ food, displacing calories and fat without diluting the flavour. So, you can eat a typical serving, yet only consume about half the calories. The nutrient-rich superfood hydrates and sustains you. Chia slows the impact of sugars on the system, if eaten together; it creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, which slows the conversion of carbs into sugar. That means the energy from the food is released steadily, resulting in more endurance. This is clearly of great benefit to diabetics in particular. It aids weight loss and intestinal regularity, while boosting strength, energy and endurance.

These tasty little berries, also known as wolfberries, have many acclaimed benefits. They are an exceptional source of the essential cell sugars necessary for proper immune function and intercellular communication and can enhance health in a variety of ways, including helping cancer patients rebuild their natural defenses, improving DNA restoration and repair, and maintaining normal cell growth, and they may help slow the aging process.

An abundant source of nutrients, they can improve vision and provide retina protection, so particularly recommended for diabetic patients. They have been shown to strengthen the immune system, increase longevity and protect from premature aging, help prevent cancer and encourage aids remission, protect the liver, build strong blood and promote cardiovascular health, maintain healthy blood pressure and blood sugar (thus reducing cravings for sugar), stimulate secretion of human growth hormone, strengthen muscles and bones, support normal kidney function, improve fertility and treat sexual dysfunction and help reduce obesity.

Some of the valuable minerals sea kelp supplies are iodine, salt, iron, potassium, phosphorus and calcium. The vitamins it supplies include vitamin A and niacin, along with a healthy dose of protein. As a highly alkaline substance, sea kelp can also help restore the optimum pH levels in the body. Experts believe sea kelp can have additional benefits, including increased immunity and enhanced brain development. Anecdotal evidence supports osteoporosis prevention and alleviation of impotence and anaemia.

It can improve thyroid function, potentially increasing metabolism and energy and decreasing weight gain. The iodine, calcium and other minerals in sea kelp are easily absorbed by the body, aiding in digestion and correcting relevant mineral deficiencies. The iodine content of sea kelp can cause a powerful effect on the thyroid, especially when sea kelp is consumed in large amounts.

Maca root, a vegetable from South America, is grown primarily in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes. It is an important food source and is commonly eaten baked or roasted. In traditional medicine, maca root is used as a fertility enhancer, aphrodisiac, stress reliever and energy booster. It is high in B vitamins, is traditionally used to increase fertility levels and improve sexual activity, and to improve general physical performance and stamina. It has also been touted as an anti-depressant.

The root has been shown to have antioxidant properties, so is an effective scavenger of free radicals within the body, protecting cells from damage by their oxidative effects. Maca may also help to lower cholesterol levels and has been used to treat symptoms of menopause and prostate issues. The plant is high in calcium, magnesium and silica.

With over 100 nutrients, spirulina, a blue-green algae, is frequently described as the most complete food source in the world. Spirulina contains over 100 easily-absorbed, life-enhancing nutrients, and all essential amino acids. It contains more proteins than meat, milk or eggs so vegetarians can use this supplement for adding quality protein to their diet. Spirulina is one of the most nutritious and concentrated food sources on the planet. It has a protein level of 60% on average, compared to red meat, which is around 27% protein.

Plus, spirulina protein is biologically complete, containing all of the essential amino acids needed for human health.  It has about the same calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium content as milk, a vitamin E (tocopherol) level comparable to wheat germ, and four times as much vitamin B12 as raw liver. Vitamins in spirulina are B1(Thiamine), B2(riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9( folic acid), vitamin C, D and E. It has the minerals potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, sodium and zinc and 18 amino acids.

Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer's disease (by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain). It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.

In mice, it has prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs, and may prevent melanoma/cause existing melanoma cells to die. A natural liver detoxifier and painkiller, tumeric may also aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management. It has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression and because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it has been used to treat arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It has also been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumours and speeds up wound healing. Also, it may help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

One of the only two forms of iodine suitable for internal consumption. Iodine deficiency is present in 97% of people due to the lack of iodine rich foods like kelp and seaweed in our diet. Iodine is a powerful anti-fungal, protects against radiation, encourages a healthy thyroid, increases IQ and protects against cancer. Iodine is antibiotic, antiseptic, anti fungal, antiviral, anti-parasitic, and antibacterial. There is increasing evidence that iodine deficiency is related to numerous diseases, including cancer.

Various clinicians and researchers have found iodine effective with hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions, goiter, fibrocystic breasts, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, brain fog, constipation, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation, and detoxification issues (mercury, perchlorate, fluoride, bromide). Iodine protects the blood brain barrier, mitigating the damage done by heavy metals in our system. It increases energy, reduces nervous tension, assists sleep and relaxation, assists clear thinking and reduces unwanted fat (increases metabolism). Iodine is one of the best oxidizing catalysts we have.

(Magnesium Chloride): After oxygen, water, and basic food, magnesium may be the most important element needed by our bodies. It is more important than calcium, potassium or sodium and regulates all three. Due to lack of magnesium the heart muscle can develop a spasm or cramp, causing heart attacks. Magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every cell in the body and a deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than any other nutrient - including cancer and diabetes.

It assists in sleep, stops PMS in women, works at a cellular level to halt the signs of aging, reduces radioactive damage and that of heavy metals and the thousands of chemicals to which we are commonly exposed. Without sufficient magnesium, the body accumulates toxins and acid residues, degenerates rapidly, and ages prematurely. Magnesium operates at the core of physiology offering us what can only be called scientific miracles in medicine; all of life collapses around its loss.

The realization that magnesium is at the centre of life in chlorophyll should help us place magnesium in the temple where it deserves to be. There are several types of magnesium, many of which have very different effects on the body, so it is important to ensure you are using the correct type. Magnesium chloride is the only magnesium which will have the above effects.

Dr Linus Pauling said: “You can trace every sickness, every disease and every ailment to a mineral deficiency”. Unfortunately the soil and all our foods are now mineral deficient due to modern agricultural practices. Fulvic acid is a naturally occurring organic substance that comes entirely from microbial action on decomposing plants, plant themselves, or ancient deposits of plant origin. It is found in several parts of the world and provides the necessary macro and micro minerals, electrolytes, amino acids and micronutrients. It contains upwards of 70 minerals and trace elements which are absorbed by plant roots for cellular interaction.

Such minerals are necessary for plants, animals and humans to maintain good health. In humans, it increases alkalinity, energy, concentration and mental clarity, memory and brain function, cell restoration, immune function, circulation and respiratory function. It also balances hormones, detoxifies and removes heavy metals while decreasing calcification and radiation damage. Fulvic minerals make the body uninhabitable for diseases such as Alzheimer's and cancer, kill viruses, bacteria and fungal infections such as candida.

Fulvic minerals assist the reproductive, digestive, circulatory, skeletal/muscular, nervous, lymphatic, endocrine & excretory systems. It is known to be great for the skin and assists in the healing of wounds and burns, while lessening or eliminating scarring or bruising; it helps with irritations including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and skin tumours. It has even been shown to end night time urination.

The other major deficiency in humans (especially in the UK) is vitamin D, which comes from the sun's UV rays. Most people feel in better health during the summer sunshine months because their levels can be much higher. It is hard to supplement in foods because it is broken down in digestion and doesn't make it through the process.

When supplemented via an oil it can be better processed by the body and improves heart, skin, reproductive, pancreatic,  vascular system, respiratory, immune and eye health; it is beneficial for cell formation and cell longevity (improving the aging process), sleep patterns, hearing, athletic performance, mood,  and weight management (including carbohydrate and fat metabolism).

It encourages strong and healthy bones (through encouraging calcium uptake) and muscles, hair and follicles, proper digestion and food absorption. Vitamin D3 is recognised as one of the best supplements for prevention of many ailments, including cancer. Vitamin D2 does not have the same benefits and can actually reduce life expectancy, so it is important to take the correct type.
