This is a snapshot of one of our recent plant medicine retreats at the Merkaba community, in March 2017. I'm happy to say that it was everything I could have wished for and more. The depth of feeling and the scope of healing are not easily put into words, like the medicine experience itself; language is limitation when trying to convey something as profound as the deep connections between people free to be their authentic selves.
Guards came down, inhibitions dissolved and genuine love infused the entire experience. All had a deeply personal process, and collectively experienced unconditional love, harmony and oneness. What could be more healing than that?
Visions of a new paradigm
Here we saw a vision of a new paradigm, thanks to the amazing plants we have been blessed to work with. So much happened over these few days together. The unexpected and uncharacteristic torrential rain initially brought some disappointment but we recognised that it was bringing us together in a whole new way.
I was sorry that the stunning Merkaba community nature wasn’t part of the experience, but the storms added a new element… we spent much time inside the intricately decorated dome, warmed by the roaring fire. This is the hub of the community and the scene of so much love and fun; where better to imbibe nature’s most powerful medicines?
Our participants came with various healing needs and a lot of curiosity. We had a few first timers and so there was nervous anticipation of the realm they were about to enter. On the first night, we encouraged them to drop their ‘psychic sensors’ with a shamanic journey.
Shortly afterwards, we imbibed. Our intelligent medicine initiated them relatively gently while giving them perfect visions, and there was dancing, singing and connection for many. The purging cleansed them and many realisations came to light, as we discovered in our integration the following morning. All was going well.
Saturday was both sublime and exhilarating
We started the morning with yoga to get the blood flowing, and a little later headed to the lake for the water experience.
Now this water isn’t warm at the best of times so combined with the freak weather, temperatures weren’t for the faint hearted.
As it happens, there were no faint hearts in this group – they threw themselves into the sub-zero temperatures with reckless abandon and as we had predicted, they were flying afterwards. Totally refreshed, exhilarated and alkalised. Fully awake!
This and the surprise period of bright sunshine fueled the dance meditation session. This kind of dance is a journey, about liberation, expression and joy. The music and sun perfectly complemented the mood the medicines had invoked, and spirits were high. At the peak moment when the apt ‘Tropical Soundclash’ burst from the speakers, the room was filled with woops and claps, everyone was jumping and it felt like pure celebration.
We invoked the ancestors and made peace
Come evening, we introduced our group to their ancestors. Ancestral healing is a powerful way to reconnect to those who came before and honour their contributions to our lives. We forgive, and we talk openly. We heal as a group, holding space for one another. It was emotional!
Once this was done, we prepared to imbibe. That night's medicine was the Caapi and chacruna mix, with chaliponga. This medicine was incredibly powerful - and literally indescribable. Within 45 minutes the plant spirit was conversing with each in entirely different ways; purging in all forms was starting and the energy in the room was higher than I’ve ever seen it anywhere.
Our medicine was powerful beyond measure
We sang our hearts out and played instruments, knowing that our powerful medicine songs were complementing this divine plant spirit’s work; we aided in purges and nurtured where necessary, and at the end of a very intense but very beautiful evening, we reconnected to each other with warm hugs and conversation before bed.
Integration the next day confirmed what I had suspected… each experience had been nothing short of profound. These brave souls had let go of so much. They’d also seen creation, oneness, and seen themselves for what they were… they’d seen true love and felt their loads had lightened far more than they’d imagined.
The day of light commenced
On Sunday we prepared to work with my beloved huachuma. Huachuma (San Pedro) is a blissfully connective medicine – and also a very strong one. On this retreat, where ayahusca took us deep into ourselves and other realms, huachuma beamed light from within and without, reconnecting us to our beautiful world with new eyes to see the true beauty.
Torrential rain persisted, so again we stayed inside. Where we could not connect with nature, our attention turned more to each other; another thing that huachuma enables is the capacity to perceive other people's divinity clearly. The loving feelings were flowing and huachuma was cracking open any remaining resistance… what arose was miraculous.
For the first couple of hours we relaxed and let it work its way through us. By hour four, the room was filled with happiness. Dancing, hugging, crying, and so much laughter! Some went on inward journeys at times, processing and healing. Some went out and ran around in the rain. One of our participants had had a motorbike accident years before and was unable to feel parts of his legs… until he met huachuma.
